Guitar at OPSMA
Our guitar lessons in Mississauga are designed for complete beginners and advancing players alike. Students learn proper technique, rhythm and musicality while playing music they actually enjoy — from rock and pop to fingerstyle and worship.
Guitar lessons in Mississauga are a great way to develop musicality, ear training, and self-confidence. The guitar helps you quickly start playing real songs: after just a few lessons, students learn simple chords and rhythms, which is fun and motivates them to continue. For children, the instrument becomes not only a creative activity, but also a way to develop memory, attention, and fine motor skills. Teenagers and adults find the guitar to be a means of self-expression, stress relief, and communication through music.
There are various training programs available, including individual lessons, lessons for siblings, and online formats. This is convenient for families with busy schedules or who live far away. Lessons usually last 30, 45, or 60 minutes, depending on age and skill level. Teachers select a repertoire according to the student's interests: rock, pop, blues, contemporary Christian music, original songs, or movie soundtracks. This approach helps maintain motivation and creates a natural connection between technique and real music.
Performances—concerts and student showcases—play a special role. They help children and teenagers overcome shyness, learn to perform in front of friends and family, and feel like musicians. For many students, this is a stage when the guitar ceases to be just a hobby and becomes a long-term passion or even a path to a career in music.

What is the best age to start guitar lessons?
Many children are ready to begin around ages 7–8, once their hands are big enough to comfortably hold the instrument and press the strings. Younger students interested in strings may start with ukulele or a small-sized guitar.
Do we need our own guitar?
Yes, having an instrument at home is important for regular practice. We can advise you on choosing the right size acoustic or electric guitar, and recommend affordable starter options.
How long are the lessons?
Most beginners start with a 30-minute weekly lesson. As students advance or prepare for performances, some families move to 45 or 60 minutes for more detailed work on technique and songs.
How much should students practice?
For beginners, 10–20 minutes a day, 4–5 days per week is a great goal. We provide simple practice routines and clear notes so students know exactly what to work on between lessons.
